SUMMER/FALL 2001

Mountains, mountains and more mountains!!!    You probably know the drill by now.  We practically live up in the mountains during the summer.  We had a great summer and ventured to many beautiful places.  Below is a recap of most of the trips we made during the warm season.  This is a BIG webpage.   If you are using a modem you should go grab a drink or something while it loads.   Broadband users will be fine.    Clicking the picture will enlarge it if desired.

The summers first backpacking trip was to Lakes of the Clouds in the Sangre De Cristo range.   Sandy and Randy joined us for the trek up to this beautiful trio of lakes.

This is a cool shot on top of Paradise Divide in the Elk Range.  The wildflowers were out of control here.  We tried to go backpacking that weekend but a weird(for Colorado) 2 day rain storm kept us car camping.  The pic below was during the one short period of sun.

In the beginning of August we took a 2 night trip into a hard to get to lake in the Holy Cross wilderness.  This was a reunion of the 5 trekers from the Canyonlands Maze trip during the spring.  The setting was beautiful and Randy did really good fly fishing.

We took another backpacking trip to the Sangre De Cristo's which is kind of our back yard of sorts.  Below is a shot of our camp at North Colony Lake.  I'll let the picture speak for itself.

Chris did the Pikes Peak Ascent in mid-August.  He was able to knock 15 minutes off of his time from 1997.  This shot is at the final switchback before the summit.  Only a few more gasps of air to get to the top!!!

Chris and his friend Paul from work went on a 2 day mountain bike ride in the Elk Mountains.  Paul is seen below in one of the several stream crossings we encountered.

This is on top of the famed Teocalli Ridge Trail.  The views are excellent and distracting when you are trying not to crash on your bike.   In all we rode about 35 miles in 2 days in this mountain bikers heaven around Crested Butte.

While Chris was riding his bike, Sharon was having a blast with her old college friends at a reunion in Portland Oregon.  Each year, some of the guys from the Illinois Wesleyan track team go there to compete in the grueling  Hood to Coast relay race.  They decided to have spectators come this year and form a reunion.

This is the beautiful Oregon Pacific Coast.  Sharon, Catherine and Michael hiked up to this gorgeous perch.
