WHISTLER-BLACKCOMB SKI TRIP

JANUARY 2001

This years ski trip brought us to British Columbia.  We flew into Vancouver and then headed up to the world renowned Whistler-Blackcomb resort which is 2 hours north of the city.  This year was a threesome of Jeff Jacobson, Jonathan Neely and myself.   Jonathan and I flew up one day before Jeff did.  We stayed in Vancouver the first 2 nights then right at the base of Whistler the next 3 nights.

Blackcomb mountain has a bonified glacier to ski on.  Unfortunately the weather was very nasty when we were up there and it was a battle to get down.   This run was 6 miles long!

We didn't shy away from catching some air here and there.  Here's Jonathan doing some hanging.

Our condo was at the Pan Pacific Lodge. This was right in the heart of the village and offered gondolas heading up both peaks and a high speed quad.  This was also the center of activities.  Below is a view from our balcony of several thousand people watching the freeriders competition on Friday evening.

After 3 days of cloudy and snowy weather, we were treated to a fantastic final day with 7 inches of powder and great views of the surrounding peaks.  Here's Jeff at the beginning of the massive 5000 vertical foot black diamond descent of Whistler Peak.

The powder got pretty deep when we went off trail in the future expansion area below Whistler Peak.  We dubed the run 2-Jakes run in honor of the its discoverers.  Little did we know that the bliss would soon turn into an epic battle on the final 3 miles down a wicked mogul field.
