Winter 2003

We spent New Years up at Trappers Lake with Sandy and Randy.  The snow was excellent for our exploring. We stayed at the Trappers Lake Lodge which is a collection of cabins and a large central lodge/restaurant.  The lodge is 16 miles up from the end of the plowed road so they pick you up in a snowcoach to get you up there.   A snowcoach is a van with tanklike tracks on it.

The entire valley that Trappers Lake is in was consumed by one of the giant wildfires of the summer of 2002.  Although the fire fighters saved some of the campgrounds and most of the lodge buildings, most of the area was torched.  It made for interesting skiing and the views were easier to see with out the thick trees.

New Years Eve was a blast.  We shared it with another couple from the Aspen area.  Vickii, Sam(old friend of Randy's), Peggy and Trip. We had a feast at the lodge, danced laughed and were very merry.

A storm dumped 2 feet of snow over New Years.  Our cabin kept us cozy though.

Our first hut trip of the season was to the Fowler/Hilliard  hut near Tennessee Pass in mid January.

Sharon got some coworkers to join her on a hut trip to Francies Cabin by Breckenridge.  Chris was stuck moving Titan to a new office so couldn't go.

Over Valentines/Presidents weekend we stayed at a hut outside of Crested Butte.  We had the Elkton Hut all to ourselves. This was when the snow really started kicking in Colorado during a 3 week set of storms.  We had 12 inches fresh snow when we arrived and then another 8 inches during our stay.
