MISCELLANEOUS 2002

At the end of March we journeyed to a backcountry hut near Aspen.   M.A., Joe and Randy joined us.  It was a long ski into the hut.  Below is a shot of M.A. and Joe toward the end of the ski in.  There was a heavy snowstorm to cap it off.

The next morning we had some fresh powder to play in.  Here's Randy doing some telemark turns.

Sharon loves the rock band Styx.  We went and saw them in April for the 3rd time.  We were close up to the stage.

The big Hayman fire scorched 130,000 acres west of Colorado Springs in June.  Here's a picture of the first day of the fire.  We just thought it was a weird looking thunderstorm and took the picture from our neighborhood. We found out that night that it was a raging wildfire.

We did several multi-night backpacking trips this summer.  One was in the Flattops Wilderness in Central Colorado.  Here is Chris fly fishing on gorgeous Marvine Lake.

In September, Chris teamed up with coworkers Steve and Paul to do a half ironman triathlon as a team.  Chris tackled the final leg which was a 13 mile run.

There was a bad drought during the summer and it made for a very strange autumn.  The leaves usually fall within 2 weeks at the end of September.  This year they started around Labor Day in some areas and lasted about 5 weeks.   So we got to see them for a very extended period.

In October, Chris went to Utah to mountain bike with Paul.  We did several trails there.  The best one was the notorious and world famous Slickrock Trail.  It travels on top of a sandstone mesa above the Colorado River.  Here is one of the awesome views from the trail.

The Slickrock Trail meanders in a 12 mile loop and goes thru many ups and downs.  Some places it is very steep but the rock provides great traction.

At the end of October we had a big family get together in Illinois.   Seven of the nine Jacob siblings where there and this was the first time all 8 nieces and nephews were together.  It was a great time.

For the third year running, we spent Thanksgiving in Moab with the Rutkowski's.  Did some good relaxing, hiking and hanging out.  The shot below is from the top of the rim overlooking the Moab valley.  I also have a panorama shot of the valley, click HERE

The trail up there is pretty exposed in spots as it skirts over to the huge gap called "The Portal" where the Colorado River exits the valley and heads off into the wild canyonlands country.
